Incorporated in March of 1932 by its original owner, J.G. Henges, our Company started as an insulation and building supply company. We began operating as the Henges Company in 1940 after becoming a successful diversified building specialty contractor.
In April 1969, Jay Henges, Jr. purchased the assets from his father, and the Henges Company was split into two operating divisions: Henges Interiors and ParKing (now Porta-King Building Systems). Our Company underwent another transition in 2008 when Jay Henges passed ownership to Steve Schulte. Steve began working for Jay in 1970 while still in high school. 14 years later, he became President of Jay Henges Enterprises.
Currently, we are planning our transition to the fourth generation of family ownership; the company will soon be in the capable hands of Steve and his two sons, Chris and Mike.

For nearly 90 years, JHE has led the way in insulation, flooring, tenant finish, carpentry work and prefabricated building construction solutions for residential and commercial customers. Since our beginnings in 1932, our St Louis insulation division (Henges Insulation) has been a large part of the success of our company. Henges Insulation’s main sales staff and installers operate out of our headquarters in Earth City, Missouri. To broaden our geographical service area, we also have locations in Union, Missouri and O’Fallon, Illinois. Our talented insulation installers are full-time company employees, Union trained and certified.
In the early 1940s we expanded our insulation and building material supply business into the Kansas City market. Seeing a larger opportunity, we greatly expanded our presence and opened Henges Insulation in Olathe, Kansas in 1978. Henges Insulation has been a leading insulation contractor in the Kansas City market for over 40 years.
For over 70 years, Henges Interiors has been a well-known and respected flooring contractor with showrooms in Earth City and Union, Missouri and O’Fallon, Illinois. We have a very knowledgeable staff of salespeople and designers to assist in selecting the right flooring for your home or business. Our talented flooring installers are full-time company employees, Union trained and certified.
The Porta-King division has roots dating back to the beginning of the modular construction industry. We started in 1969 as “ParKing,” devoting our entire production to small, factory assembled buildings. At the time, these small buildings were most often used in the petroleum industry as small gas station attendant booths. The name was changed to Porta-King Building Systems in 1974 when we started producing a modular wall system for use as an alternative to conventional construction. Applications include partitions and interior buildings for in-plant offices, equipment enclosures, clean rooms and more. We invented the Pivot Lock modular wall system in 1977 and were granted a US Patent on that system shortly thereafter. Porta-King has continued to add products and system designs to improve product offerings and application innovations, making Porta-King the market leader.
Our corporate operations, engineering department and technical sales team are headquartered in Earth City, Missouri and we have 10 regional sales offices located in major cities throughout the country. Our manufacturing operations are located one hour west of St. Louis in Montgomery City. As we have grown so has our manufacturing capacity. Today, our diverse line of prefabricated and modular construction solutions is produced in two separate facilities with a total 180,000 square feet under roof.
